Hello everyone, I found this M40 at an estate sale and I have been working with the seller over the phone. They've sent me requested photos and while the shell looks legitimate, I now have concerns about the decal after reading the decal section of the site closer but I am still unsure if it's legitimate. I know the liner is reproduction and I am ok with that. I said I was willing to offer $401 for this item if it turns out to be real and they accepted that. I can try and get a more level angle of the decal if need be. Any feedback would be appreciated!

That makes me feel a lot better. What's your opinion on the price I'm offering? This would be my first piece. Here's a couple things I noticed in comparison that stuck out to me. The top fake has those marks coming up from the bottom of the feather, not in the middle. The bottom right fake has that second level of feathers merging together and being connected all the way up to the top. Are there any other obvious things I missed in my evaluation?

I agree with David. paint and decal looks good. however post a straight close up as to confirm. Decals should be always photographed straight first.
with luft eagles there are many minor graphic details, hard to explain; they are very subtle. anyway those few fakes are out also by looking at the material (another thing to pay attention)

You should devote your time to studying the originals...not so much the fakes. Luft. decals are very tricky & challenging especially in this century. However, they are the most commonly seen branch of service for helmets, most we see are originals. So there are plenty to study....even thru photographs.

Well this was an estate sale like I mentioned, the price marked was $850 or best offer. The estate manager kept me informed of the offers throughout the estate sale and because I had contacted him prior to the sale starting he was willing to give me the chance for final offer. When the sale closed the offer was $400 and I offered $401 and that was accepted. So for my first piece I'm not too upset about the price, and the liner isn't that big of a deal to me. I can always acquire an authentic liner and throw it in there later.

Just know that altered helmets are not something experienced collectors have an interest in. Helmets are not cars , restored helmets devalue.
