Tracing the owner of a 'named' helmet.
Quote from wolfpack17 on April 13, 2020, 7:59 pmCan anyone let me know the best way, or source to trace the owner of a 'Named' helmet? I understand that there are one or two websites to assist, but I do not know of them. I have a surname and a Feldpost number and that is it.
Thanks in advance.
Neil

Quote from Potato Digger on April 13, 2020, 8:28 pmYou can try googling the FP Nummer and usually a site which I think is called Axishistory shows up, they have all the Feldpostnummern on there.
As for the name itself, you can give it a go at the volksbund site, they are responsible for the German war cemeteries and they have listings for MIA and KIA soldiers, you can search the name there and see if your name correlates with where the helmet was maybe sourced from.

Hope this helped,

Quote from Potato Digger on April 13, 2020, 8:34 pmFor example these sites gave me the chance to research this item I found metal detecting(in the Rhineland), piece of a gas mask canister named to an Uffz. Pruttseit who I now know probably survived the war, since all the Prusseits in the Volksbund died in the East, also I was able to find out that this FP Nummer relates to a Flak battery which correlates with Flak shell casings I found there.
Anyway, enough of that. Just as an example that it can be a useful tool.

Thanks Luis - The Feldpost number I tracked (Sort of) today. It was the name that was giving me a problem. Thanks for the help.
@ Thanks again Andrea - will give that Volksbund site a try.

Quote from Historyt on April 28, 2020, 2:06 pmIf it is a rare name, you can even try phoning the people with the same family name. Of course you don't want to bother the people, but perhaps it helps them too. In one case I could even clarify the identity of an "unknown soldier" this way and the son shed many tears but was very grateful.
