yard sale m40 SS
Hi guys,
Last weekend I picked up this m40 ET66 SD SS helmet from the yard sale. It was crazy cheap (2 figure number). Most likely this is not original, but it was so cheap I did not mind whether it is original or not. And there is always that very small chance, right ?

It is a good one. Nice score.
I have to agree, the shell and decal look good. Not so sure about the rivets though. Why no paint at all, and the legs look extra long. They may be fakes. Good score though regardless, well done!

I was 95% sure this must be faked SS helmet. If this turns out to be original, I have to fill my lottery ticket too.
Tomorrow I will contact the seller and ask for more details. Obviously it is a ground find relic, but if the luck continues, he might know the location it was found.

This is not a ground dug relic.
Just a normal helmet that may have been tampered with years ago (i.e. removed liner) for some unknown reason. Or poorly stored the the leather rotted away, leading someone to ditch the liner.
A fantastic score. Sometimes we get lucky in this hobby.

Thanks, I got fair share of comments about bad quality photos related to my early posts so I have been trying to focus on them.
What should I do or NOT do about the thin rust coating inside the helmet ? Oil and 0000-steelwool ?
I would not touch the rust inside. It can't get any worse since it's spread over the entire surface. Too valuable of a helmet to mess with, you would only decrease the value & desirability.
However....if it were mine, I would install a liner & matching original pins just to complete the look. I think it deserves a nice liner. Plus with a liner installed, you will hardly notice the rust.
