For the record 🙂 Was not implying the shell was a fake, just that I've never seen a visible "box" around the numbers before.
I've never seen the actual punching tool that was used to make these stampings. We do know that the individual numbers and letters were separate pieces that were probably inserted into the tool (and then changed when a new lot of steel was used).
Just thought it was and interesting observation.

As other have already stated, please never remove any parts of a Helmet unless you are convinced it is indeed a fake or has already been messed with.
As also mentioned, this is definitely an original shell and the stampings are correct.
Sadly it have received a post-1945 revamp somewhere along its life (I'm guessing during the lat 10 years) and that has completely removed any "historical relevance" this helmet once had.
It's a shame but we all know it happens.
Please don't give up on your dream of owning an original WW2 German Helmet . . . they are available everywhere for an inexpensive value
