Scrubbed SS Q66 M40 SD - Comments please
Quote from Panzerheld on March 21, 2020, 11:03 pmQuote from akriener on March 21, 2020, 8:04 pmQuote from sysyphus on March 19, 2020, 9:06 pmI am with Frank at 100%.
what's the sense to buy an old object that doesn't look old anymore because of this "cleaning". There must be a reason as to why they decrease their value (according to the amount of damage) due to this unrespectful action
Understandable. But I am not in the business of planning to do a lot of reselling or trading. And while the community has standards as to what pieces should be like to maintain resale value, shouldn't collecting also be about what YOU personally like?
As I said on multiple forums, this Helmet was originally painted Black and then viciously scrubbed back damaging both the original helmet patina and the precious SS decal.
To cut straight to the point, this helmet is “junk” and whilst it once was maybe a great helmet, it’s been molested, violated and scrubbed to death.
I also said to you that the wisest decision you will make is to pass on this helmet and save up for a decent original. The photo attached is an original one-look Quist M40 SS I recently purchased for $3500 . . . far better value!
Not sure if I’ve made myself clear enough?
Michael

Quote from akriener on March 22, 2020, 2:14 amI did find this one and they said they'd go down to $3,600 because of the damage of the decal. But yours is much nicer!

Quote from akriener on March 22, 2020, 12:39 pmI will be heeding all of you seasoned collectors' advice on this one. While I like the look, I understand why it is a bad investment. My goal was to spurn an healthy discussion about this item and I think that was accomplished. And thanks to Frank popping over to a different forum to educate one of the previous owners on why this is now a bad buy item!

No worries , bad guy item is a strong word but I think such helmets are over valued , if you can pick it up for peanuts it could be considered if you really felt the urge although even a few hundred euros could not convince me.

Quote from sysyphus on March 22, 2020, 3:38 pmQuote from MAP on March 19, 2020, 4:09 amAs I noted over on WRF. The seller needs to provide much better photos. And without that distracting background the distorts (for me) the helmet and the ability to analyze it.
The helmet certainly looks scrubbed with remnants of black paint.
The decal photo is really poor and taken at an angle and very low resolution. But, admitting I could be wrong, It looks closer to a Pocher decal than a Q. The left rune appears to be closer to the break where the Q is below the break.
Maybe D, Andrea, Frank have better eyes than I. I trust their analysis more than mine on SS decals.
it's a Q Michael.

Not really a bad buy as Frank said and i agree on that.
it is priced for what is worth. you'll never find a M40 SS for that price unless you discover one in a barn or attic.
it's easy to fall into the trap of being emotionally excited...but then you do realize that a helmet like that is hard to move when the time comes. (and there will be that day for sure because you'll want to upgrade at some point)

What is a good price on a helmet in that condition? Like Frank said, if it can be had for peanuts compared to the relative price of other helmets I'd probably get it as a fun piece, but the asking is absolutely high based on what you all have educated me on
